New Beta Bulletin Board Design: Proglass_Red

Postby wammie » Wed Aug 24, 2011 2:10 pm

All,

A new template has been installed on our bulletin board, Proglass_Red. Due to several issues with the current default template, this new template is being considered as a new default design.

The main goal of the template is to bring the design into alignment and functional compatibility with the most current version of PHPBB3, which is 3.0.9. This template is up-to-date and is expected to remain so through future version updates of PHPBB3.

Some features of this design:
  • Banner text design to match business cards and intended design for the Hack Factory front door
  • Ability to change the pattern beneath the banner text
  • Added Blog, Wiki, and Donate links in the menu bar
  • Text size control at top right

Right now we're running PHPBB version 3.0.8, but this template runs on that as well. When we upgrade to PHPBB 3.0.9, we'll need to do a few more steps to get everything up to speed, but when we do, this template will afford better performance and security.

Please test this template and respond with any questions or comments. To use the design, navigate to User Control Panel > Board preferences > My board style, select proglass_red, and save your preferences.

Thanks for testing!

Are you seeing a different look than in IE, Firefox, or Opera?

I know we can make it variable width if we want, or if the installation requires some refreshes, but is it extremely important or desirable?

Orion, you probably have much greater resolution than the typical computer/user. The main fixed-width table looked fine in Chrome on a computer at the H.F. at medium/normal resolutions, and to my recollection, it looks fine on my home monitor at 1920x1200 resolution. No problem though to attempt a variable width fix if this is bothersome. I'll try to get this done over the weekend.

This theme appears to be designed around a resolution of 1024x768. On my widescreen 22" LCD at 1920x1080, about 50% of the horizontal space is wasted.

Otherwise, though, it's fully functional, except that Brandon's screenshot attachment extends off the right of the layout, into the grey space.

I personally would be happier with a fluid-width layout, to make optimum use of whatever resolution a person happens to be using. More and more people are using 16:9 monitors these days, with 4:3 LCD screens being difficult to find and expensive.

Other than that though, the theme does look really nice.
If it ain't broke, your version is outdated.

Thanks for the comments. Also, this is a clean looking design only because that's what we've had so far and people seem to like it. Personally, I'd like to see it looking a bit more gritty. That look can also be an alternate design. If anyone has thoughts on gritty vs. clean, please post.

So... it turns out this is indeed a fixed-width design which can't easily be made as fluid width. I'm working on another solution.
