You might gather some of the local amateur radio operators to be members. There are numerous hamfests different times of the year. The Ham Radio community is loaded with
tons of technical expertises and just live for this sort of thing. If you are a ham like me
you have more that one home made gadget and a critical mass of junk for future projects.

I would guess that not everyone knows about the maker movement.
