I'm working up several classes on 3D Printers and would like to gauge interest. Here is a quick rundown of the classes I'm working on and a quick description;
3D Printers 101 - An overview of current technologies, both open source and private, from desktop to building sized. A quick primer to 3D modeling and printer software, as well as slicing programs. We'll also talk a bit about Thingiverse and Github where you can find a lot of excellent models ready to print or easily modified to your needs.
Build a RepRap - Build your own RepRap 3D Printer, based off the Prusa 2 model. This course will need some lead time as I'll need to print all the parts for class attendees, not to mention sourcing and ordering any non-printed parts. This class will cost approximately $600, hopefully less, but at the end of it you'll have your own 3D printer and have a basic understanding of how to start using it. The class will be broken into several sections; building the frame, adding the motors and electronics, build a power supply, loading and using the software, tuning and leveling.
3D Modeling - I'll need help with this one as I'm only really versed in AutoCAD, Revit and a bit of 3DS Max, which aren't available to most people. I'd like to have folks that work with Blender and OpenSCAD and some of the other freeware programs to jump in and give a hand.
DIY 3D printer electronics - This is mainly an idea I have of getting a group of knowledgable people together to either design from scratch or use an existing design to come up with an electronics package for the RepRap that is affordable. I'm shooting for $50 for each unit, which is about 1/3 the cost of the cheapest available package. My personal choice, at the moment, is the Gen& boards from the RepRap community, but there may be better options.
