Branding issues again.

Postby soldiersquared » Fri Sep 27, 2013 12:32 pm

I've been a member for a few years now and am mainly hands-off but have been
an extremely active recruiter that usually only comes in to the space to give tours.

I was at the last board meeting (elections) and we had a huge discussion of branding.

I searched the forums and the last posting about this was a few months ago without
hinting at a resolution.

Questions:

-What the hell are we calling ourselves?
-Who are the ideal membership candidates?

I basically live at the UMN and all of my peers are about 18-25, I cannot back it up empirically,
but my experience says that the VAST majority of prospects are way more responsive to "The
Hack Factory" instead of "TC Maker". It is a demographic thing, recruiting youth is vital.

I understand the controversy about the word "Hacker" but "Maker" is way too androgynous and
vanilla. It also needs explanation. I have always voted for the "Hack Factory" with the idea
that "TC Maker" would resurface when/if we expanded to an additional space. "Hacker" is just
sexier and easier to inspire.

So, what am I telling all the people I give the business card too?

The result of the member motion was overwhelmingly in favor of keeping both names. This is the official position, adopted by the board on July 9, 2013:

The name of the organization is Twin Cities Maker. Members join Twin Cities maker, events and projects are sponsored by Twin Cities Maker.

The name of the building is The Hack Factory. This name is only used when referencing the physical location. The Hack Factory has no members, sponsors no projects, runs no events.
