yup, $20 a month, i don't think you get to roll the passes over though.
it also gives us a means to do something like a day pass. if you only use one day, it's a lil spendier, but for a weekend project it's ideal. add in additional days at $10 per, and if you hit $50 you're converted into a membership that month. also even for a day pass, where can you rent one tool for 20, muchless a shop? (ok so a tool library, sorta)

i ws thinking more proverbial pass than literal ones. i.e. you get yoru name on a list, with 2-5 check boxes next to you. when you stop in teh shop manager ticks off a box with a date and initials, and if you buy extra day passes, they initial the 3rd+ boxes and sign the envelope you dropped in the payment into the drop box.
we *could* do something like 2 part tickets adn discard last months' so only the valid months numbers are noted, and have folks turn in a ticket, but that's a hassle for folsk to keep with them.
i'd like to do some sort of nametag/pass, and that could get punched or something. eventually rfid tags would make things really easy.

Im more inclined to the literal pass. if you make them into business cards there not that hard to keep track of.

Metis seems to have an RFID fetish. (Not that that's a BAD thing... I don't like the business card pass idea because they're easy to lose and easy to forge. To counteract those, we'd need some kind of verification database and if we have the database, we don't need the physical card. Just store the person's name & pass info. Shop manager just checks their ID, verifies the pass, and logs it used. And by "database" I mean, all encompasing membership database, or a google docs spreadsheet, or a physical log book stored in the shop office, or tally marks scratched on the shop wall, etc...

I agree that keeping track of them would be important. I worked for 3 years at a small family run greenhouse, they never thought they'd have a problem with people counterfeiting their gift certificates, but they did. They ended up still issuing the same certificates, but numbering each one and keeping a notepad with the $ value of each number, and then it was crossed off when it was used. This prevented people from using a certain number twice, and from altering the value.

The RFID is just another form of ID. We're not going to hand out an RFID to anyone who buys day pass, are we?

There is a couple programs that will issue and track serialized passes for gift cards or day passes or whatever.
