Does the hack factory have anything that would easily cut this?

it's about 16"x 16".

I tried starting at it with a hand saw -- and I WILL prevail! -- but probably only want to do that once. I'm cutting 3" slabs at first.

I'm also thinking about quartering the remaining pieces and attempting a lathed bowl or 4. Not sure if there's capability for that. Would likely need lathe training.

Not that would cut 16 inches, the Shopsmith can maybe hit 8 inches.

I could get a chain saw that is having carburetor issues, but that is a bit rough, and I have heard talk about building a larger bandsaw.

Personally I would love to create a portable saw mill, but it would only have limited use at the HF and the wood drying process would not work well at the space.
(a year or so for some hardwoods, and it would just take up space)

Rather than a gas chainsaw, an electric one could be mounted to a rail system, add a stepper motor or two, and we could make a very rough mill..

I also have a crappy guide system that is intended to make boards out of logs using a 2x4 that I bought at Northern Tool years back, but for just 3" end cuts a big bow saw or a chain saw would be the option I could help with.

in theory there was a 14" bandsaw coming in. (this theory has been up for ~6 months) are you looking to slab it or quarter saw it?

I'm looking to cut two slab pieces and then quarter the rest of the log for use in lathe bowls. These would all need to age (dry out more) before use. I've got one slice already and picked up a 24" raker blade yesterday to cut the second slice. The 14" bandsaw would come in handy for halving and quartering the remainder of the log.

Looking at that grain gets me dreaming of turning a lamp base from a piece of locust wood that is sitting in my garage.

Guess we should find a way to fund the Bandsaw and lathe, anybody have any idea's? Or rebuild broken ones.

We could post wanted posts on Craigslist and other local sites?

Well, I managed after two hours (two sawing and beer sessions), to use my crosscut handsaw to make a 3" slab:


Knowing that I'd never again want to spend that much quality time sawing one slab, I decided to make a raker blade bow saw:


It was a nice n quick project for a no-frills bow saw that can be easily broken down and stored - or displayed in its stark wooden beauty.
A few things I'd add with time are are:
- A hand guard or recessed handle for the lower hand grab
- An arch to the cross-bar for a little more clearance and other such nice curves
- Wing nuts

Not to throw cold water on things, but the wood lathe has an incomplete tailstock. I think it just needs a center to attach to the tailstock itself, which ends in a threaded screw at this point, may not be needed for some turning, but thought I'd throw it out there. BTW if it's not in the Wiki a page for it with specs and needed parts would be a great next step.
