Audio and Video Editing Tools is a collection of free and/or open source tools for creating, editing, mixing and sharing audio and video data.

Ideally all audio and video outputs would be created using open source tools so that anyone anywhere can open, edit, and contribute to the further development of the audio and video.

Some free, open source audio creation/mixing/editing tools:

  • Audacity is a great open source audio mixer/editor/recorder. Works with Windows, Mac, and Linux
  • Ardour is an open source digital audio workstation. Mac OS X and Linux.
  • LilyPond is a sheet music engraving program. It uses a simple text-based input file to produce sheet music scores. Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
  • Bristol is a synth emulator for Linux. It comes with modules to reproduce the sound of more than 30 classic synths.

  • Open Movie Editor is an open source video editor for Linux only.
  • Kdenlive - open source, free video editor for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X and FreeBSD. Utilizes FFMPEG among other open source projects.
