Hangout with cool people and talk about locks and securityCurrently Being held in-person at Twin Cities Maker with limited capacity and online via zoom. Open Locksport is an informal meetup to discuss locks, lock picking, and related aspects of physical security.   We variously pick practice locks, help new folks learn to pick, make tools, look at cool locks someone brought in, or chat about lock and door hardware news.  Anyone is welcome, from folks who've never paid attention to the chunks of brass their keys go into, to trading professionals and red team pentesters.  Well behaved minors with very good fine motor skills and excellent patience and ability to focus are welcome with their guardians.   In-person capacity is limited to 6, so book tickets early. If however you find that you cannot attend, reach out to release your spots so others can have a chance. Proof of COVID19 vaccination will be required, along with adherance to all of TC Maker's COVID19 safety protocols.

Open to everyone, an few hours of each month of discussion and practice of locksport: the study of locks, lockpicking and other aspects of physical security. Bring your picks, and practice locks, or borrow some from us. No experience necessary

Every new member, from expert wood workers to people just beginning, who wish to use the Wood Shop Needs to go through this orientation to Learn: 1) Proper procedures to use the SawStop, Miter, and Planer (Being a Community Wood shop, there are some special items that each member needs to know on these machines) 2) In depth tour of the Wood Shop - Get a sense of the "organization" of the shop to aid in finding tools 3) Wood Shop Policies and Best Practices

Bring a photo or flat piece of art up to 6" x 8" and leave with a custom framed picture!In this class we will practice miter cuts and joinery(v-nails) of picture frame molding, single and double custom cut mats, glass cutting, general mounting information, final assembly, and hanging hardware. We will meet downstairs in the artifactory. This class is also offered Monday, Nov 22 at 6 pm. Half of the proceeds from these classes are to build up an inventory of framing materials and equipment for member use. This class will not cover anything related to producing custom frame molding (i.e. routing, sanding, staining, carving, etc) Please note: all supplies included are basic framing supplies - clear glass, standard mats, regular foamcore, dust cover, etc. If you prefer to use higher end supplies (acid free mats and/or non-glare glass), please email me for more information on where to purchase before class. We will use flexible framing points meaning you will be able to remove and replace the glass/matting/artwork after you get home. The pictures posted in this event are examples only and do not reflect frame molding or mat colors used in class- there will be a few options available. If time allows, we can review the cuts that were used in the first picture (black, cream, and red matting). We will be standing on tile or concrete floors. Please wear comfortable closed-toe shoes. The space is heated but can get drafty. There will be stairs to get down to the location of the class - please email me if special accommodations are needed. Strategies for MIG Welding with plate and thicker material in fabrication use.*Current COVID-Precautions: Masks are not required for vaccinated individuals, you are welcome to wear a mask to class though. Welding hoods and jackets are available to participants again. It's recommended to bring your own gloves, there's a limited variety of old gloves The following are recommendations for those wanting to bring their own PPE:  Clothing: Welding Jackets will be washed ahead of the class and can be worn. If you are not going to wear a welding jacket you MUST wear 100% cotton or wool, jeans with NO paint or oil or other material on there, and leather shoes.   Gloves: What we have available is pretty limited, I would strongly suggest purchasing a pair of your own gloves. You don't need heavy-duty gloves, a pair like this will do well ($7.28) or even this ($8.95).  Welding Hoods: If you see yourself welding in the future, it's a solid investment. For folks who have the additional money to spend, I recommend the Weldcote hood, you can buy it online or at Metro Welding, located on Central in NE. If you're looking for something that costs less, reviews have been positive for this Miller auto-darkening hood, but it's still a little pricey at $86. The hoods we use are these Chicago Electric hoods from Harbor Freight ($36) if you're not sure welding is for you or you would like to spend less initially but want to bring your own hood. Depending on where we are when this class begins, updates to policy and practices will be provided.  About the Class This class, hosted by Twin Cities Maker, focuses on an easy and accessible introduction to welding on plate steel. 1/4" mild steel material will be used and grinding techniques will be covered. Prior experience or an intro class is highly recommended as welding foundations will not be covered in-depth. Torch cutting will be included as an add-on option for students. Who this Class is For   This class is for people with some prior experience who are looking to gain more information about how to weld with thicker materials and practice some foundational skills. What to Expect This class is two and a half hours long and limited to four students to ensure quality time on the welders. Safety glasses and welding hood, some gloves, s and jackets will be provided This class will cover how to use the MIG machines, evaluating your settings, understanding weld terminology, and how to stack welds for multi-pass joints. Physical Space The floors are concrete (going to be harder on joints) and there is seating available. There is water , a soda machine, and one bathroom. There are six stairs; three to get to the main door and three more to step-up into the larger shop area. If you need additional accessibility information or support, please reach out to the instructor. There is also often loud noises and dust; if you have sensitive lungs please bring a respirator! There will be earplugs as well. About the Instructors Cory Gabrielle currently works as a union pipefitter. They've been welding for over four years in various roles and has a degree in Welding Technology and for some reason is going back to school for HVAC. They love working on ways to make information more accessible and understandable to all, and enjoy teaching and sharing ideas. This Class is For Members of Twin Cities Maker at the Hack Factory Only (to become a member visit us Any Wednesday Night from 7pm-9pm) Please Print and Bring Your Ticket with You This class will cover everything you need to know to safely operate the 25X2 Drum Sander at the Hack Factory.  You'll get hands on time with the drum sander along with some valuable information on how to use the machine to its full potential. All proceeds from this class will go into purchasing and maintaining the drum sander and sand paper for the machine.

This class is intended for TC Maker members but is open to all. Focus is on basic DC TIG welding knowledge.*Masks are not required for vaccinated individuals but encouraged, there are welding hoods and jackets available for use during this class but bringing your own is still recommended if you see yourself welding more in the future. Participants will need to bring their own gloves. A basic introduction to blacksmithing, you'll walk away with a hook to show off in your home.About the Class This class will give participants a basic working knowledge of many of the fundamentals of blacksmithing and the safe use of the shop equipment. You'll learn how to safely start and shut down the forges, and various forging techniques such as drawing out metal, flattening, texturing, making that iconic blacksmith curl at the end of your hook, and shaping a curve. This class is slated to be 2.5 hours long, or however long it takes to complete the project as additional time is discussed by student and instructor. You also have the option of making a more typical "S" shaped hook if you'd prefer. Please wear closed toe shoes, and non-synthetic clothing. Long sleeves encouraged as slag does sometimes fly off your work piece. Eye and hearing protection provided or you are welcome to bring your own. Welding style gloves encouraged as well (you can buy the inexpensive kind from your local hardware store) COVID precautions are still in effect and include the following:*No community gloves, all participants must bring their own gloves.*Participants must wear masks at all times. About the InstructorJosh graduated from the Dakota County Technical College welding program in 2005 and since then has helped friends and family learn the craft. A member of both the metal shop and blacksmith shop at TC Maker, his current focus is in Viking era blacksmithing, armoring and jewelry-making for re-enactment purposes.
